Our tutorial will have you on your way to streaming your set in no time.

Want to broadcast your set from the comfort of your own home? All it takes is a little know-how, a decent sound card, and some basic encoding software that you can get for free.

  1. Set up your mixer and turntables.
  2. Plug the audio cable from your mixer into the sound card on your computer.
  3. Get a copy of RealProducer Basic from RealNetworks.com. The Basic version is free.
  4. Open RealProducer and click New Session. A wizard will pop up. The wizard is just another way to enter your recording information. You may choose not to use it.
  5. Click "Record from Media Device" and hit OK.
  6. Select "Capture Audio" and click Next. (For video select "Capture Video.")
  7. Give your set a name and click Next.
  8. Choose either "Multi-rate stream" or "Single-rate stream," depending on your server, and click Next.
  9. Select your target audience and click Next.
  10. Select "Music" (higher quality, but mono) or "Stereo Music" (lower quality, but stereo) and click Next.
  11. Click Finish. Begin recording by clicking the Start button.
  12. Finish recording by clicking the Stop button.
  13. Press Play to preview your file.
  14. Sign up with a service such as Groovefactory unless you have your own server that will host the file(s).
  15. In RealProducer, start your upload to the service or server by clicking File and New Session. A window will pop up.
  16. Select Live Broadcast and enter your server information (Server, Port, Filename, User, and Password). Click OK.
  17. Once the session has started, you'll see the audiometer running.
  18. When the upload is finished, you'll have a file that you can share with everyone.

As always, we want your feedback. If there is anything you really want to see on a future episode of AudioFile, let us know by sending us an email or by clicking on the Talkback feature below.
