Navy's Sea Superiority
Navy warships are becoming smaller, faster, and more computerized, with fewer crew members -- and sometimes no crew at all -- to fight new, focused missions in the 21st century. It's part of the Bush administration's plans for transforming the Navy and other military branches after the end of the Cold War in order to fight short wars and terrorism in global hotspots. John Pike, a military analyst with GlobalSecurity.org, said tracking terrorists, catching drug smugglers, and protecting coastlines are just some of the Navy's emerging responsibilities.

Online Gaming Without Boundaries
Forget the splashy graphics and "hack 'n' slash," the old mantra of online gaming.
Skotos, a multiplayer online fantasy game, allows players to move through mythical worlds using text-only descriptions. Gamers use prose as a tool to create virtual worlds without boundaries. The game appeals to the socializing sect of online gaming, those who seek relationships to accomplish a particular goal. Participants have an impact both as player and story contributor. Skotos welcomes original artwork and descriptions to add to current games, as well as for games in development. Giving the public creative license is empowering, says CEO Christopher Allen.

Online Roommate Matching
College can be a stressful place, especially when you don't know who you'll be living with for a year.
Webroomz is trying to take the guesswork out of the process. Georgia's
Kennesaw State University and the
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are the first schools to test the new software. Students fill out personal information, it's compiled, and then the computer provides students with a list of compatible roommates. The software puts students in control of picking who they'll be living with. And there is no extra charge for students; Webroomz says the schools pay for the service. The schools say they hope the new technology will cut down on shuffling students into different rooms and will also reduce paperwork.
S1m0ne: Not so Pixel Perfect
From the beginning,
S1m0ne is a beautifully choreographed visual dance of images and mood. Then again, this is what we have come to expect from director Andrew Niccol -- the man behind The Truman Show and Gattaca. Like his earlier work, Niccol manages to bring an art-house film to an audience who doesn't otherwise go to art-house films. Colorful, contrasting images, that don't look over-digitized, leap off the screen. However, what the film maintains visually and conceptually, it loses in the storyline.
