I love blogging. It feels great to say what's on my mind and hit that wonderful Rebuild button on my Moveable Type menu. Unfortunately, my privacy settings make me log into my MT menu every time I want to update something. Oh well, that's just the way it works with privacy.

Fortunately, I found a couple alternative blog entry programs designed to save you and me some time and effort. (They have some great extra features, too!)

  • w.bloggar
I really love w.bloggar. It's compatible with Moveable Type, Blogger, b2, Nucleus, BigBlog Tool, and a couple others.

Once you enter your MT settings (for example), you can add blog entries just like you were in MT, but with better, MS Word-like features. You can edit old blog entries, too, or post locally and publish later. This is nice if you're not online when you hit a creative streak.

You can upload images just like you would inside MT, but I find the interface more intuitive.

Oh, and I don't know many people who do, but if you have multiple blogs, you can set up each account and post to each within the same interface.

  • Zempt
Zempt is only compatible with Moveable Type and has the same basic features as w.bloggar, but I like it for different reasons.

As its co-creator Adam Kalsey explained to me, "Zempt has a huge advantage over w.bloggar because w.bloggar doesn't allow you to do anything except post a title, single category, and entry text. If you use extended entries, excerpts, and keywords, you're out of luck."

Having these abilities is essential for those of us who organize our blogs more than average users.

I also like Zempt's toolbar bookmarklet, identical to MT's bookmarklet option (see my previous blog report on how to do this).

Unfortunately, Zempt is missing an Upload Image feature. I'm a big image poster, so unless I'm definitely only writing text, I won't use it. Kalsey assures me the next release of Zempt will let you upload photos and create a thumbnail, so we have something to look forward to.

The Mac alternative

One of our viewers, Jim Phelps, wrote in to tell me about iBlog, an app that lets you post your blog to your .Mac account so that you don't need to sign up for another hosting service. You can read Jim's blog here. Thanks for the tip!

If you're a frequent blogger looking for more entry options, one of these programs is right for you.

Happy blogging, my strange bananas.

Love,
Sarah
