Give your Mac some FTP bliss.

I think we can all agree that FTP (file transfer protocol) clients aren't very sexy. They serve a purpose, and that's it. But we need them to work perfectly. Or at least work really, really well.

Most Mac users use Fetch as their OS X FTP client. As an occasional Mac girl, I know that Fetch works, but I've heard lots of moans and groans about how it's buggy, it's crashy, and it lacks a clean, simple interface.

My friends, my neighbors, I urge you to try Transmit. It's got a great interface (like OS X's), and it promises to be faster than other clients.

As far as the general FTP-to-server stuff, Transmit works fine. (You Unix folks will dig the core engine.) But it's got some nice extras, too. For example:

  • Set your local paths and mark as Favorites. This saves me a lot of clicking when I'm trying to access my blog image archives.
  • SFTP (Secure FTP) transfers work well.
  • Flexible list views, depending on what you want displayed.
  • Import your Fetch bookmarks by downloading Transmit Favorites Importer.sit (55KB).
  • Use AppleScript easily. Download these sample scripts to get started.

There's a lot more to explore, too. I've never much loved FTP (I'm not much of a Mac lover either). But a combination of OS X and Transmit is enough to win me over.

You can try Transmit for free for 30 days; you can buy it for $25. Are you won over? Post your comments in the Talkback section below. I'll be back to read 'em!
