Control and customize your navigation and command-line needs with Sarah's latest pick.

sarah lane - storyI'm sure many of you use your Run command line to easily access programs and utilities, right? Me too. But I just wish it was customizable. And that's why I love an itsy-bitsy program called SlickRun.

SlickRun is a 32-bit floating command line utility that works with Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, and XP. It gives you access to anything on your computer or network, from URLs to Windows commands. And it lives in a tiny little corner of your screen, so there's no need to actually open it, unlike the Windows run command.

But what's even better is that SlickRun lets you create command aliases. For example, "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" simply becomes "Inbox." My website (http://www.sarahlane.com) becomes "sarah." It makes shortcuts a whole lot easier.

Customization is also one of SlickRun's strong points. You can change the color, opacity, text font, and position of your SlickRun window. You can also choose a system-wide hot key to jump to SlickRun instantly, no matter what you're currently doing. Your search history is cleared with a single click, and you can assign any sound you like to SlickRun's functions. When SlickRun's idle, it also shows you the date and time. I like looking at it much better than I like looking at my Windows clock.

To be honest, I have no need to use my Run command window ever again! Three cheers for SlickRun!

Have fun!
Sarah
