Host your own Internet frag fest.

On today's episode of "The Screen Savers," I will show you how to set up an Unreal Tournament 2003 server for Linux. Setting up the server is not a difficult thing to do, but the procedure is poorly documented.

You'll need 900MB of disk space and at least a 1-GHz CPU with at least a half gigabyte of memory, or your players will experience lag. And don't run the server as root. I run it as the special "ut2003" user to protect my system.

Instructions

  1. Download the dedicated Linux server. At about 250MB, it's a big file. The software can be found on the Web on a number of websites.

  2. Once you have the file, unzip it (there is an unzip utility built into Linux) and then run the install scriptas root. Go ahead and take the default values that the installation utility provides and let it install into /usr/local/games/ut2003_dedicated.

  3. While the installer is running, get a CD key from Epic Games so that your server can be listed when people look for Internet-based servers.

  4. After a good amount of time, the installation will complete. Switch to the /usr/local/games/ut2003_dedicated directory and start the server with the following command:

    sudo ./ucc server DM-Flux2 ini=server1.ini log=server1.log
