With a couple of registry modifications, you can easily overclock your video card, and have smoother video and better frame rates.

Overclocking a video card means running the card at a few megahertz faster than the manufacturer specified, which makes it move more data than it did before. In other words, "souping it up."

If you only use your video card to surf the Net or run a spreadsheet application, you probably don't want or need to do this.

Geek warning

Overclocking your video card technically voids the warranty and could also permanently damage your card. This doesn't happen often but it can become a real issue if you really push the envelope.

I've overclocked many video cards in the past and I've never had one fail because I overclocked it. At worst your system may lock up if you push the card beyond its physical limitations. We have safeguards built in to our utilities that let you reset your card speeds back to the defaults.

We'll take a look at Nvidia and 3dfx cards. We'll also assume you're using Windows.
